catching up
so here's an update on me.
JOB
i'm still working at Forbes. i've had some articles published in the magazine and online, which i'm very proud of. my favorite so far was my profile of chloe dao, the winner of project runway. i interviewed her before she actually won, because i knew she was going far. chalk it up to watching way too many reality shows, but i have to say, i can pick 'em! now i have documented proof that i knew all along that she was going to take home the prize.
when i started i was ecstatic about this job. mainly that was because after months of searching, i was finally gainfully employed. i also thought that after a year i would be that much closer to something more substantial and less assistant-y. as my one year anniversary looms (july 27 if you care), i feel no closer to moving on. on some levels this is fine with me. i am a creature of habit. i don't mind my commute. i care about the people i work with and my bosses are the best in the world and really look out for me. even the work load isn't too bad. but i feel very unproductive and careerwise i feel counterproductive.
so as of june 13, i am officially looking for a new job. i've already applied to about 8 different positions, mostly other editorial assistant slots at other magazines and book publishing houses. its depressing that all of the experience of the past year only qualifies me for a position of equal standing, but my hope is that another assistant may be more clearly destined to be promoted to the next level.
that being said, of course my dream job at the moment would be a reporter here or at the website. i applied and interviewed for a style reporter position at forbes.com back in february/march. as you can tell, i didn't get it. in fact, the position was kind of put on hold. but i've given up hope that i'll ever hear of that again. after another fruitless interview at dotcom, i've kind of lost all hope of ever working there. positions in the reporter pool here are scarce, too. and with my minimal clips i don't make a very attractive candidate. it's just been very hard for me to produce content when i have another full time job that keeps me pretty busy.
HOME
my apartment is still undecorated. that's ok with me because i spend 95% of my time in a basement studio on the other side of the park. 80% of my clothing and belongings now live at my boyfriend's apartment and i sleep there almost every night. its a nice compromise for us, since i'm in no rush to move in with him completely and his apartment couldn't handle the extra stuff (and his landlords, who live in the 3-story townhouse above him, wouldn't put up with it). also i have grown to truly dislike my apartment and so i can't stand spending more than a day or two there a week anyway. not like i even spend that much time there now. i have promised him i'll start spending more time at my own place after my parents deliver my a/c. right now it is simply unbearable to be there in this heat.
my lease runs out november 15. so expect some blogging regarding finding apartment number 2 around the end of september. i've already decided i'd like to move to park slope. since i practically live there already, i've grown to really love the neighborhood. its pretty, quiet and very accessible to the subway and just about any kind of restaurant or store you could think of. i've already started skimming craig's list regularly to see what is available. unfortunately, it looks like even for a studio i'll be paying more than i pay now. i don't mind paying $200-$300 more for an apartment in an area that i like, which i can hopefully spend more time in. specifically, an apartment that a certain someone wouldn't mind coming over to every once in awhile.
(to be fair, its not all his fault. in the early stages of our relationship i never pushed him to come over, and instead went to his place because it was nicer and i liked it better. now the precedent has been set. in the 6 months we've been dating, he's been to my apartment twice. the next time he visits will probably be when he helps me move out.)
anyway, in order to afford a few hundred $$ more a month, i'll need a new job, or a raise. i need this by october 1. got any ideas?
LIFE
despite job, housing and money concerns, my life is pretty nice. i'm so happy summer is here. i'm looking forward to lazy weekend days by the pool in stamford, warm evening walks in prospect park and summer movies.
hobby update: surprise, surprise i didn't become a snowbunny this winter. i went skiing once, during a blizzardly weekend in vermont visiting my cousin. it was fun, but i realized then that vermont is really far away! however, i'm dying to take another trip north this summer to visit bri. i have to research other modes of transport. the drive is very long to do alone.
this summer looks like it will be filled with job hunting and article writing. at least i hope so. the boy is very busy with work-related things, so i'm going to need to keep entertained in other ways. there are lots of things to do in the city, places to visit i haven't visited yet, museums to see, ice cream to eat. i'm looking forward to getting out and about.
in health news, i joined weight watchers at the beginning of may. i was very sick of gaining weight and i haven't been able to keep consistent about going to the gym. cutting calories and limiting my portion size seemed the only option, and weight watchers was the best solution. i have good friends who have done very well on ww, and in the past 6 weeks i've seen amazing results, too. i've lost 10 pounds now!
i'll try to keep my personal life to a minimum. but as you can already tell, the boy has become a very large part of my life. however, i try to spend time with friends, too. jennifer invited me to go to delaware with her in july, so that's a few weeks away now and i'm sooo looking forward to it.
that's enough recapping for now. i'll be back with more soon.
