living in the city: the problem with girls

tonight was the debut of the new mtv reality show and hills spin-off "the city," in which former hills "cast member" whitney port comes to the east coast to "work" in public relations for legendary designer diane von furstenburg. setting aside rumors that have been rampant for months about the "reality" of whitney's new job and life, i wanted to watch the show to see if i recognized any major landmarks. i also secretly hoped i could gloat about how fake it all seemed. new yorkers don't go there! they don't talk that way! people in new york don't live like that! (fyi one of whitney's "co-workers" is climbing socialite olivia palermo, one of the privileged class who live in amazing west village apartments with roof decks and get pairs of manolo blahniks when they are 17 years old.)

yes, whitney's lifestyle (few hours at the office, many hours at west village and meatpacking district hotspots) is far from the reality of new york city life. but for all the fake bits, at least one truth revealed itself: cattiness and woman on woman crime.

i consider myself a very personable person. i can read people and what they want to talk about and what they want to hear. i have met a few women during my life that love to talk about boys. and not just any boys. the boys you are dating. how you met, how long you've been together, the latest gossip, etc. etc. i bristle when i chat with these types of women. i generally get the feeling sometimes that if i didn't have a boy to talk about, there would be nothing to say between us at all. i don't like being tied to the male company that i keep. i want to be judged for me.

anyway, long story short, "the city" cast member olivia seems like on of those girls. she is constantly bugging whitney about the guy she is dating. how he is, how they are doing, why he decided to skip the lovely rooftop dinner party hosted by olivia. its a lot of pressure for a girl! and you can tell, as soon as whitney's love life falls apart, olivia will relish in it. it may be a clever bit of editing, but i can see the hint of truth in there. i know girls like olivia, and i take great pains to keep my distance. whitney will be well advised to do the same!
