where does the time go?
another summer week is coming to a close. i'm heading up to my parents' after work, so i can roast by the pool in the july heat. can't wait!
well, i have BIG news. i've decided to move. yes, its a few months too early, but i have finally had it with my apartment and i feel like everything is falling into place so i should just make a move now. several things happened to precipitate this rash move:
1. tory got a job in conferences and her replacement, lauren, started monday
2. lauren and i got to talking on the new hires cruise on wednesday (on the forbes yacht!!) and i learned she is looking for a place to move by september 1 or earlier, and we really got along. she is sweet and nice and i like her.
3. i attempted to spend the night in my apartment, it was as hot as an oven, i almost blew out the power with my a/c, cable, tv, computer all plugged into one outlet (one of four in the whole apartment).
4. i called my management company to see how much it would cost me to break my lease and learned i'd only lose my $900 security deposit. also, if i'm out by august 1 i won't have to pay august rent.
so, i pitched my idea to lauren. she's on board, so we've started the great hunt for a 2 bed in park slope. good luck, you say. we'll probably have to pay a ridiculous broker fee, but if we find the right spot (and i'm going to be picky) then it will be worth it!
thus the hunt starts again. i like the idea of this because its something i can take control over. i don't like my job, but there's nothing i can do about that if no one else will hire me. with my apartment, i finally have options. i can find a reasonable studio is PS, or a sublet, or now i can live with lauren. i like the last option best because i know her and i trust her already, and all my stuff can fill up the apartment.
but yesterday was my first foray into hunting in park slope. i had experience with realtors last year, so i know how to deal with them. i also know what to look for in apartments. i went up to 17th and 8th ave in park slope yesterday and learned that area is not where i want to live! its a lot of old people, not the young, bohemian thriving community that central slope is. the apartment was roomy and had all the essentials, but it was only so-so. kind of run down and not in the right spot. i'm not settling this time. i have faith that something will come up, and lauren does, too. its nice to have that sort of support when you're apartment hunting. that's what i was lacking last year.
after that initial site inspection, i met lauren to look at another place. it was an open house listed on craig's list and there were about 50 people waiting outside. it started 20 minutes late and ended up being a big place in a great location, just a railroaded apartment! not exactly what we were looking for. oh well. there will be others! we just have to wait until next month. and what's another $900 to keep my storage facility, i mean apartment. actually, i shouldn't call my apartment a storage unit. storage units are climate controlled...my apartment is 800 degrees, so hot that i've found small roaches just curled up dead. wonderful. now do you understand why i need to move out?
the hunt continues monday. now, to enjoy the weekend!
