learning to be a leader and other career advice

since getting the boot from my full time gig in the magazine industry last year, i have been busting my butt in an attempt to get an article published in a new publication recently launched by forbes (which is one of my former employers). the publication is called forbes woman, and its dedicated page on www.forbes.com launched earlier this month. it will also be a print publication, coming out quarterly and shipped to current forbes subscribers (so i hear).

today, my first forbes woman article went up on the site. its an article about female leadership told through the experiences of niki leondakis, the chief operating officer of kimpton hotels & restaurants. through writing this article i got to spend a lot of time talking with niki and i was really inspired. i wish i could work for her, but i have no experience in restaurant and hotel management, and also i think she works out of an office in san francisco!

anyway, the article, called "learning to be a leader" turned out amazingly, and you can check it out here.

i also put together a slide show with 10 tips on how to get the most out of your leadership skills. the tips are valuable whether you're a man or woman, but they are particularly focused on women, obvi. follow the link above to check out the slideshow, too.

reporting for this story also led me to j.t. o'donnell, a career strategist and syndicated columnist, and her website for job seekers, careerealism. she is an amazing inspiration to me and every time i talk to her she makes me feel like i can succeed in this dying industry.
