saying goodbyes
this weekend has been tough. for the past few weeks, i have gotten close to a friend at work, erin. we share a love of cheesy lifetime movies, wine and cheese and indian food.
our friendship started to solidify in july, over countless glasses of wine, an arugula salad and a cheese plate.
tomorrow she is moving to san francisco. and although i've only known her for a little less than a year, and we've been close for even less time, i am really going to miss her!
i spent the better part of thursday, friday and saturday bidding erin adieu. so it was tough and bittersweet. sweet because i am lucky to have had such a friend, bitter because she is leaving, and sweet again because she is going to have a great life in san francisco with her fiance and her third floor apartment in a victorian house in the haight-ashbury. with a turret.
i think the thought of saying good bye has made me a little nostalgic. by thursday, the heat and humidity had climbed in nyc. the past few nights have been hazy. on thursday when i stumbled home after a night of too much wine and too much cheese, i found myself enthralled by the construction lights glowing in the haze surrounding the condo that keeps growing across the street from my apartment building. the cicadas had been humming for a few days now, a true sign of late summer. and it might just be my imagination, but the days seem to be getting shorter again.
despite the recent heat wave, i know the summer is winding down. and that makes me sad. labor day is next weekend...my least favorite weekend of the year! this summer has been surreal, and it has sadly just flown by. the sunshine and sundresses have made me seriously think about moving to a place where it is summer year round. somewhere without humidity, preferably.
but do i have the guts to pick up and leave like erin? probably not without a reason. for erin, she always knew that she would end up back in san fran, a city she grew up near. but it took an engagement ring and a new job for her man to drive her westward after several years in the big apple.
sometimes i ask myself...what would it take me? right now, not much.
