roommate free

i am in a good mood today, and its partly because my roommate is going to be out of town for the next week. now, obviously this would be exciting to anyone who shares their living quarters with someone else...but for me, its extra sweet knowing that i will have the place to myself for a few days. she has gone away like this before, but this time i'll be able to really enjoy it. once matt goes on the road next week, i'll be spending every night at my own place. there will be no escaping the roommate, her boyfriend and/or her friends then!

although i hate to speak ill of someone who probably reads this blog, i must share this conversation that took place between the two of us yesterday. i think it so perfectly embodies our relationship and our individual feelings for our shared home.

scene: i have just come home from work and brought the super, who i ran into in the hall, into the apartment with me to look at our leaky toilet. he wants to know if we'll be home during the day at all so he can fix it.

me: (to roommate) are you going to be around during the day at all?
roommate: no, i'm going out of town tomorrow. why?
me: bob wants to know when he can come and fix the toilet.
roommate: what's wrong with the toilet?
me: it's been leaking for the last week. that's why i put a cup there. i thought you would have noticed.
roommate: oooh. i saw the cup. i thought it was probably there for some reason.

yes, i have plans for the apartment this week while roommate is away. after the toilet is fixed i'm going to deep clean the bathroom, and perhaps finally discard of that dresser in our kitchen. i know that up until now the thought of a dresser-free kitchen has just been a pipedream, but after living in this sorry state for more than a year, i know that if i want something done, or cleaned, or removed from the apartment, i have to do it myself.
