mother's day

last week, i called my mom to tell her when i was planning to come home for mother's day.

"i just took two vicodin," she said with very little explanation. "so if i sound a little weird, that is why."

for the past few years, my mother has had chronic pain in her shoulders, and they really don't know why. a cortizone shot a few years ago seemed to get rid of the symptoms for a while, but they apparently came back in full force recently. the doctor ordered an mri, prescribing opiate pain killers in the mean time.

the vicodin knocked out the pain, but also knocked out my mother. by the time i came home on saturday afternoon, she was better, but not really herself. so that made mother's day interesting, to say the least. it was still fun, and we had a very nice brunch on mother's day morning.



then we made ice cream, went outdoor furniture shopping and then visited stew's (a truly amazing grocery store).

we're really not a crazy family. i promise.
