the lunch problem

there are a lot of things that i love about my new job. i write all the time everyday. everyone is nice, young, friendly and helpful (although i don't know if anyone hangs out together outside of work). there is lots of positive reinforcement. i can leave early: if i am done, i am done. i get paid more. we get free lunch on fridays.
but besides fridays, i'm not really sure what to do for lunch. no one goes out to lunch together. not sure why, because if it was a time thing there are plenty of places around the office to grab a sandwich and sit and eat quickly. maybe its the same thing as afterwork socializing.
anyway, half of the people get food to eat at their desks. but since we sit in one big room, no walls or cubes or anything, everyone hears and watches you chomp away. i'm self conscious about everyone judging what i'm eating and how i'm eating and all the crumbs i'm getting all over my desk!
i guess you get used to it.
my other alternative is going out and eating by myself outside of office. i did this rarely while at forbes. usually i ate in union square park. i guess i could go to washington square park now, its only a few blocks away from broadway. but as it gets colder, would eating alone in a restaurant make me a loser?
i guess i do have a final alternative: having lunch with other people who aren't in my office. i wouldn't mind that, as long as it didn't take too long and i could stay close to the office.
want to come eat lunch with me and help me feel like less of a loser?
lastly, i could just make friends and see if they want to get lunch with me. is that silly? we're all the same age, similar interests, job, etc. why can't we socialize?
more updates on that later i'm sure!
