home again

as i have learned before, nothing ruins a great trip than a long, painful trip home. i have just returned from a wonderful trip to vermont, and i am so tired and hungry i am silently vowing never to travel again.

don't get me wrong. i had an amazing time this weekend. i got to play with my cousin's little dog clover, drink magic hat beer fresh from the brewery and go shopping in the little boutiques that line church street in downtown burlington. last night we went to an 80's dance party, and i am pretty sure that i am still recovering from a hangover which is probably why i just ordered chinese food.

however, i just had the longest trip home...partly because of weather and my own stupid choices. here's the jist of it: my cousin dropped me off at the airport in vermont at 3:15, and i walked into my apartment at 8:45. here's more of the numbers game: the in flight time from vermont to nyc is 45 minutes.

it all began with winds in the new york area delaying departures from jfk just after 3 p.m. the plane i was going to take was flying from jfk to burlington, just to fly back again. it was late leaving new york, so it was late arriving in vermont. we were the lucky ones, though. some planes to the new york area on other airlines were cancelled. i was so happy to have chosen jet blue!

once we landed in new york, almost an hour behind schedule, i still had at least an hour until i could make it home, unless i took a cab. i decided against it, mostly because i only had $5 in my wallet. i had to take a shuttle from the plane to the main jet blue terminal, then board the air trian to the subway stop.

but it wasn't even smooth sailing until then. first, i boarded the wrong air train and took it two stops in the wrong direction. then, once safely on the train that would take me directly to the subway, i got off a stop too early and had to wait 15 minutes for the next train to come. once at the subway stop, and lugging 50 pounds of baggage, i went to wait on the wrong side of the tracks, so i had to run up the stairs and over before the train towards manhattan arrived.

once on the subway, it took FOREVER. it was a local, because the express wasn't running this weekend, and it would stop for long stretches at the stations. there was also a scary man threatening to hit his small child the whole ride. eventually i made it back to brooklyn, and as soon as i stepped out of the station the sky opened up and it started pouring.

i waited under an overhang for a few minutes until the sheets of rain subsided, then i ran as fast as i could, given all the weight i was carrying, to get home in case the rain started again.

it was an exhausting trip home! but i am happy and grateful that i went up north. i love my cousin to death and we always have so much fun together.
