this marketing job...

so i promised yesterday that i would divulge a little more info about the job interview i had on tuesday. here's the skinny:

i sent my resume in for this position at the end of july (gives me hope for all the ones i sent in this week...maybe i'll hear about them by the end of september). the group marketing manager, jay, emailed me last friday and asked me to call him to set up and interview. i called him first thing monday and we arranged to meet tuesday at lunch.

first of all, the company that jay works for is a trade magazine publisher. he works for the group of magazines under the personal finance heading. i interviewed for the position of his assistant, although i don't think i would be an assistant in the respect that i am now. most notably, we didn't discuss answering phones, getting lunch, making reservations or filing. i would be the assistant for the group and pick up the slack for everyone. i would be doing the tiny details and boring jobs that no one else wants to do (what else is new) while learning marketing. i would also get a chance to write marketing copy and possibly a newsletter or a market research report.

if the subject matter of the magazines i would be working for is boring, at least i would get to learn about marketing. and there are other trade magazines that this company publishes that i might be able to work for eventually. if the job itself seems a little off course, it is. i'll still be in magazine publishing but on the other side of the fence, otherwise known as "the dark side." but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. as cynical as i've been about editorial here lately, this might be a wise move for me, at least for a little bit. and the major up side is that there is much more money to be made on the dark side than the one i currently work for. hadley told me all about that when she tried to sway me towards pr, but i didn't want to listen. now that i'm broke and hurting, its not looking so bad. although i'm not ready to shill for stupid products and kiss journalists' butts just yet.

the one thing i have to keep telling myself about this oppurtunity, besides the fact that i'll be making more money, is that i could be good at it. and if i'm good at it, i'll probably enjoy it. and i am seriously reconsidering why i went into *journalism* to begin with. i think it was because i was just good at writing and wanted to get paid to do it. but i'm also good at many other things, things i can use to make me money and make me happy, and so i think this might be a step in the right direction.

anyway, jay seemed to reallly like me, and believe in me. he sort of led me to believe that if i wanted this job i could have it. short of actually giving me a job offer right there, that sort of the feeling is the best you're going to get. he told me i had to decide if i wanted to pursue a job on the other side of publishing, and get back to him. then i could meet with his boss and the process could continue. after thinking it over a little, chatting with matt and everything, i emailed jay and told him that we were on. today he sent me a job application for his company to fill out, and i assume i'll be meeting his boss next week or the week after. the longer this takes, the better. i'm in no rush to take this job, and this lets some other jobs that i've sent my resume to flesh themselves out...

will keep you posted.
